Siddhas say…

You are the Self, the All pervading Self that is Beyond and also within its creation-The Universe at the same time. You are in every matter whether visible or not of the Universe. Being so in the Body in the form of consciousness, you experience the body and over the period of ages(janams) you have come to feel you are the Body-This is a samskar. One of the most primordial samskar. Now when the body gets slapped by someone, irrespective of what the body feels, you-the consciousness, which feels that it is the body, cries, gets angry, shouts, etc. This is misery, albeit a false oneĀ  as the body feels only as long as you are in it. Hold on. Realise, that you are the Self and not the body.- You have to remove this ignorance that you are the body or the ego. This is Self Realization. Knowing the Truth- The Nameless One

Rudrashtakam finds its origins in the Ramanyan written by the Great Goswami Tulsidas(16th century AD) in Varanasi, the Holy city of Lord Shiva. He was writing the Ramayan in the Vishwanath Jyotirlinga temple and it was due to the grace of Lord Shiva that it could be composed and thus dedicated this hymn in his praise.
